The second annual Unity in The Community Back 2 School Celebration was held at Norfolk Scope on Saturday, August 10, 2024, in collaboration with the City of Norfolk. Over 229 Norfolk Public Schools, City of Norfolk, and Community Partner employees volunteered and welcomed more than 528 attendees. Backpacks, age-appropriate books, shoes, clothing were given away by various organizations. Free food was also provided by the Norfolk Public Schools Department of School Nutrition Food Truck. The Virginia Department of Health offered free vaccinations and eye screenings in preparation for the start of school on Monday, August 19th. Norfolk Mayor Kenneth C. Alexander and Norfolk Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Sharon I. Byrdsong gave remarks on the importance of school and community support in achieving student academic success.
